In August, 2020, a Kaiser Permanente member who uses a mobility scooter found the slopes of a line of five accessible parking spaces outside the front entrance too difficult for unloading his scooter. At a lengthwise slope of 4.1%, those spaces exceeded the ADA requirement for slope – a maximum of 2% in all directions.

RAC members decided to take on the noncompliant spaces as a project, and on August 26, 2020, RAC emailed KP Member Services about the noncompliant slopes.

Allan Aziz, Medical Center Manager for the KP facility in Reston, enthusiastically followed up, worked closely with a contractor for improving the five spaces, and in addition, the many other accessible parking spaces on the property. As of July 6, 2021, the renovated spaces met ADA slope requirements. It is worth noting that this was accomplished during the labor and materials shortages caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The original asphalt was replaced with concrete “to ensure they remain compliant,” according to the contractor. RAC has seen that procedure used in its Hunters Woods Elementary School and Herndon High School projects. The contractor also added accessible route striping behind the accessible parking spaces.

The KP project is the 30th successfully completed since RAC’s founding in 2008 as a committee of Reston Citizens Association – RCA. RAC is most grateful for the ready and willing response to this accessibility concern.
